Laura Benanti has been tapped to headline the Rockettes' New York Spring Spectacular. The new show featuring the iconic New York dance troupe, will celebrate the charm of the Big Apple, complete with Whoopi Goldberg as the voice of the Statue of Liberty. The previously announced production will be directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, with Diane Paulus and Randy Weiner as co-creative directors. Joshua Harmon will pen the script. Performances will run from March 12, 2015 through May 3 at Radio City Music Hall. Opening night is set for March 26.
Benanti, currently seen on ABC’s Nashville, took home a Tony for her performance in Gypsy; the stage and screen fave was also nominated for Into the Woods and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Break Down. She will play the lead female role of Jenna, a billionaire and CEO of her own company, who just purchased a NYC tour company that she plans to take virtual. She has friends in high places, a few you may recognize, but little does she know that she’s about to embark on an unforgettable New York City adventure with Rockettes! Other stars, including two male co-stars (one old, one young, let's get dreamcasting!) will be announced later.
New York Spring Spectacular will be produced by MSG Entertainment and The Weinstein Company (which is working with Paulus on Finding Neverland). The show will include Rockette dance routines reworked from Heart and Lights, which canceled its premiere earlier this year. In addition to the iconic moves of the Rockettes, the new production will feature puppetry and 3D special effects. So You Think You Can Dance's Mia Michaels will choreograph the first number of the show.
